Dentures

These tools are created by our dentists to replicate removed natural teeth as well as a false gumline to hold them in place. Dentures are mainly a cosmetic procedure to preserve the structure of the mouth. They are designed for all types of patients and can fit those who still have some teeth or even none at all.

Types of Dentures

The dentures required depend on whether some natural teeth remain on either the top or bottom gumline. These two types can be broadly explained in two categories: complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all the teeth have been removed or lost. They can be prefabricated to be used immediately after all the teeth are removed, known as immediate complete dentures. They can also be created about 8 - 10 weeks after all the teeth have been removed, also known as conventional complete dentures.

The downside of an immediate complete denture is that gums and bones tend to shrink during healing. As a result, there may be issues with the dentures fitting correctly. However, immediate dentures allow the patient to have a replacement already made to avoid living their daily life with bare gums during the healing period.

There are also partial dentures, similar to a dental bridge, which are most appropriate when some natural teeth remain on either the top or bottom gumline. The denture comprises the replacement teeth attached to a gum-colored plastic base usually held in place by a metal framework in the mouth. Partial dentures fill the gaps created by missing teeth and keep the remaining teeth in position. Partial dentures are always custom made by our team to allow a proper fit and natural-looking appearance.

What Materials Are Used to Make Dentures?

Decades ago, dentures were made from plastic or porcelain, while today, a hard resin is used. It is essential to know that dentures can chip or crack if dropped. The materials used are not as strong as the natural teeth, making it necessary to replace dentures every five years.

What Are the Reasons for Wearing Dentures?

Dentures fill the space left by losing teeth, making a smile appear beautiful and natural. They also help uphold the mouth structure by supporting the systems around the lips and checks. Wearers of dentures can again chew, although there are guidelines for chewing and food types to be eaten, including temperature. Dentures are also an excellent tool for those that suffer from oral pain or other types of oral health conditions that hamper their quality of life, and tend to be less expensive than dental implants.

Are There Any Changes Required to My Lifestyle When Dentures Are Worn?

When you wear dentures, it affects how you eat, although you will adjust over time. Also, you may have difficulties pronouncing some words initially. However, this can be overcome by merely practicing the words you have difficulty pronouncing.
