Do You Make Sure to Brush the Roof of Your Mouth?

Posted on 8/9/2021 by Dr. Brandon Cooley
Do You Make Sure to Brush the Roof of Your Mouth? It is important to follow a thorough oral cleaning routine for the best results. As much as most people brush their teeth daily, not all follow the correct procedure. They only brush their teeth for what they believe to be long enough, and, sometimes, brush their tongue. If there is time, they also floss and rinse with a mouthwash.

Even though all these steps are good for oral health, forgetting to brush your tongue and the roof of the mouth almost renders them useless. Therefore, it is extremely important that you brush the roof of your mouth whenever brushing your teeth. This is because the mouth roof can be a haven for bacteria. Failure to clean this area can cause oral infections even if you clean your teeth thoroughly.

How to Properly Clean Your Mouth

When it comes to cleaning your mouth, you need to stick to a strict procedure that covers every part of your mouth. First, you need to ensure that you are brushing for at least two minutes. Brushing shorter than that could leave out some bacteria while brushing for too long could also damage your teeth and gums. Secondly, make sure that you brush your tongue whenever you brush your teeth. The simple act of brushing your tongue will get rid of any bacteria you might have missed when brushing.

Lastly, remember to brush the roof of your mouth and all other surfaces that bacteria can accumulate. These surfaces can be the outside of your jaws, the insides of your cheeks, and under the tongue. The more surfaces you miss, the more bacteria are left in your mouth.
