Why Do We Need to Trim Teeth Before Placing Veneers?
Posted on 7/26/2021 by Dr. Brandon Cooley
Veneers are one of the best solutions available for creating a perfect white smile. Instead of whitening using lights and paste or gel solutions, we can fit a 'shell' over the top of your teeth, creating the perfect white smile for every individual. However, to achieve this look we need to first clean your teeth, then 'shave off' or 'trim off' some of the surface of your natural teeth. This is to create space for the veneer in your mouth.
Can I Get a Veneer Without the Trim?
This will depend on your dentist, for us, you will need to receive a trim. This is because, while veneers are thin, they cannot slip over your natural teeth and still look correct. The layer of enamel that is trimmed away from your teeth is all that is needed to ensure that your veneers look correct and natural while fitting comfortably behind your lips. This also ensures that you will be able to talk, eat, and smile without an awkward period of your mouth adjusting for the new pieces.
What Can Veneers Fix?
While veneers don't fix issues, they enhance the aesthetic of your smile. There are multiple studies showing that getting veneers can increase self-confidence while being a relatively fast solution to dental problems. Veneers improve a lot of common dental issues like chipped teeth, misshapen teeth, crowded teeth, or gapped teeth. And because they fit over your natural teeth, they can provide an extra layer of protection for the real things.
