How Does Caring for Dental Implants Change Your Oral Hygiene Routine?

How Does Caring for Dental Implants Change Your Oral Hygiene Routine? After getting dental implants, it is important to keep your oral hygiene routine steady to prevent gum disease and other oral health problems. Dental implants require a similar oral hygiene regimen as your natural teeth. However, there are a few minor differences involved, especially if you have multiple dental implants.

How to Maintain Your Dental Implants

Regular brushing is necessary when you have dental implants and should be done once when you wake up and again before going to bed. This prevents any plaque buildup and reduces your risk of developing gum disease. If you have several or an entire row of dental implants, our staff will recommend a specific type of toothbrush. This toothbrush can be manual or electric, but its purpose is to ensure the bristles of your brush get into the crevices of your teeth. Since you have dental implants, there is a more likely chance for plaque and bacteria to grow under your teeth without the proper toothbrush. If you only have one or two dental implants, a typical toothbrush will usually work well to prevent that.

After brushing, you will still need to floss regularly between your dental implants. Since they function identically to real teeth and have a similar structure, food and other debris can get stuck between them. Our team will show you the proper method when flossing to ensure maximum efficiency during your flossing. You can then follow up with mouthwash for a fresh, minty breath.

Caring for your dental implants is nearly identical to caring for your natural teeth. You should also avoid foods that stain your teeth since they are more difficult to whiten after excessive staining. Contact our office to learn more about your oral hygiene practice with dental implants. We would love to help!
