How to Pick Out the Right Toothbrush for Your Needs

Posted on 2/15/2020 by Dr. Brandon Cooley
How to Pick Out the Right Toothbrush for Your NeedsChoosing the right toothbrush for your needs is just as important as actually brushing your teeth. The proper toothbrush allows you to get rid of bacteria in your mouth more efficiently. Not to mention the wrong toothbrush can do damage to your teeth and gums.

Before learning to pick the right brush for your teeth, it's important to talk about the wrong toothbrush. There are two types of brushed you should stay away from unless advised otherwise. The first type of brush to avoid is denture brushes. Unlike regular brushes, denture brushes are not suitable for teeth. This is because their hard bristles can cause micro-tears on the gums, which can become infected. For the same reason, avoid using hard-bristled toothbrushes when possible as well.

What to Look for in a Good Brush

Now that you know to avoid certain types of brushes, you can start choosing the type that is good for your teeth. First, let's talk electronic versus non-electronic. There is heavy debate as to whether or not an electronic toothbrush is a good investment for your teeth. On one hand, they cost much more than a traditional brush. However, they also proclaim better cleaning. Electronic toothbrushes have shown to clean teeth better, but it's not an investment everyone would like to make.

If you don't want to invest in a more expensive toothbrush, there's no need to fret. Brushing your teeth with a traditional brush will do just fine. There are two things you want to check before purchasing one though.

First, make sure that the toothbrush has a soft to medium brush hardness. Second, make sure the toothbrush is approved by the American Dental Association (ADA). If you do these two things, you will be purchasing a solid brush that'll keep your teeth clean. If you have any more questions about tooth care, please give us a call at our office.
