Untreated Dry Mouth Can Cost You Your Oral HealthMorning breath is the ire of many, and often accompanied by a bone-dry mouth. For most of us, it's a once-daily occurrence, and easily remedied by brushing our teeth in the morning. But, for some, dry mouth lasts beyond the first few moments of the day.

Everyone with dry mouth should be aware: It may be common, but it is not to be ignored. A dry mouth can spell danger for your teeth.

What Causes Dry Mouth?

There are numerous causes of dry mouth. From medications, such as antihistamines, to medical conditions, like diabetes, and even depression. Even stress can cause dry mouth! As we age, our body produces less saliva. This may also be a factor in mouth dryness.

Our mouths are teeming with life. Each living moment, there is a complex network of bacteria checking and balancing the health of our mouths. Saliva production plays an important role in this process; the bacteria in saliva help combat harmful, plaque-forming bacteria. If not enough saliva is produced, harmful bacteria is left to run rampant, eating away at our teeth and gums. Sore throat, illness, cavities, gum disease, fungal infections, and a host of other health problems may follow if dry mouth is left untreated.

How Can I Prevent Dry Mouth?

All of our patients are recommended to brush and floss twice per day. In addition to following our dentists' advice, make sure to drink enough water throughout the day. Keeping hydrated can help prevent an excessively dry mouth.

If your dry mouth is caused by uncontrollable factors, such as medication use, or age, our dentists will be able to help you combat it by recommending treatment specific to your case. In some cases, dental devices may be recommended.

Address your dry mouth with our dentists at your next routine check-up; we can remove any excess plaque build-up caused by your symptoms and help devise a plan to prevent further problems. If you are experiencing unusual symptoms, please call us for an appointment today.
