Ways of Managing Tooth Sensitivity

Ways of Managing Tooth SensitivityTooth sensitivity can be an uncomfortable condition, but it is quite common. Sensitivity can range from minimal irritation to major pain, but there are ways that you can manage it.

Buy a Soft-Bristled Burhs

Brushing too hard can damage the enamel, leaving your teeth feeling sensitive. Instead, purchase a brush with a smaller head and soft bristles. This way, you'll be less likely to expose the dentin or encourage recession of the gums – two main culprits of sensitivity.

Try De-Sensitizing Toothpaste

There are many brands of toothpaste on the market that are specially made for sensitive teeth. Be sure to choose a fluoridated option rather than those that aim to control tartar. Spread a thin layer onto the exposed portions of the tooth or the areas that feel especially sensitive before bed. After a while, the sensitivity should begin to ease.

Use a Fluoride Rinse

Fluoride is an important mineral that is needed to maintain strong, healthy teeth. Fluoride will strengthen the enamel, which will protect the inner workings of your teeth. This can help you to experience less sensitivity when you eat or drink, especially hot or cold items.

Avoid Acids

Foods that are high in acid can lead to acid or enamel erosion, which is especially dangerous for the teeth and your enamel. If you don't want the enamel to wear down, avoid soda, coffee, citrus fruits, and other items that might cause damage. When you couple avoiding these items along with other treatment options, your sensitivity should start to subside.

If you try to manage your sensitivity on your own and it just doesn't seem to be helping, please give our office a call. We can inspect your teeth, and if appropriate, we may be able to recommend some dental procedures that can help. Call us today to find out how we can help you to feel more comfortable.
