Things We Wish You Knew About Caring for Your Teeth

Posted on 7/20/2018 by Dr. Brandon Cooley
Things We Wish You Knew About Caring for Your TeethThere are some people who think as a dentist we enjoy when patients have cavities and other problems. Actually, that is far from the truth.

Dentists get more enjoyment when a person comes in who has maintained good oral habits and only needs a regular checkup and professional cleaning.

Dentists understand that people can have problems with their teeth and gums, but we also know many of the problems are avoidable. These are some of the things we wish our patients would listen to when we tell them.

We Want Your Help

Some of the patients we see wonder why they have cavities or some other problem if they see us regularly. We want to tell them that although we provide many services to help your oral health, it is also the patient's responsibility to do things.

We know that you have heard about the importance of brushing your teeth twice a day. But we wish you would take a few steps to make sure you do it right.

•  Get the right Tools - Have you ever wondered why we give you a new toothbrush when you visit. It is because we want you to use a good toothbrush and we know they do not last forever. When you buy a toothbrush, don't choose the cheapest option. Get one with the right bristles for you and replace it often.
•  Use the Right Toothpaste - There are so many options these days that choosing a toothpaste can be hard. The type to get depends on your teeth/ There are toothpastes for yellow teeth, sensitive teeth or to fight tartar buildup. We can help you determine what type of toothpaste fits your needs.
•  Don't Ignore the Signs - If you have pain in a tooth or in the gums or if you see bleeding from the gums, don't hope it will go away. Call your dental professional and see them as soon as possible. Waiting usually only makes a problem worse.

While there are many other things we can complain about as dentists, these are some of the things that are the most frustrating. We know that these are not easy things for a person to hear, but if they do listen to what dentists have to say, they can enjoy their smile a lot more often.
