How Losing One Tooth is Like a Domino Effect

How Losing One Tooth is Like a Domino EffectPerhaps you have lost a tooth as a result of an injury to your mouth, or maybe you had some decay and instead of getting a root canal, you decided to have the tooth extracted.

Whatever the reason for your missing teeth, it's important that you seriously consider replacing it, either by a partial denture or an implant. Why? Because living with missing teeth has a detrimental effect on not only your oral health, but your overall health as well.

What Can Go Wrong?

No one wants to lose their teeth. We know we need them, and we'd like to keep them for as long as possible. However, when that does happen, please consider the domino effect it can have on the rest of your health. As soon as you lose a tooth, your jawbone will begin deteriorating. The bone begins the process of being reabsorbed into the body since it's not being used any longer.

This can have a very negative effect on the surrounding teeth. They will begin to shift to fill in the hole and can become crooked and loose and even fall out. The teeth on either side of the gap left by a missing tooth begin to lean into the gap and if you're missing a bottom tooth, the teeth on the top will begin to drift down because there's no resistance.

The shifting of the teeth, the misalignment of the jaw and the deterioration of the jawbone are all painless, so unfortunately, many people believe that there is no harm in missing a tooth.

All of these things that we've mentioned can be prevented by calling our office and setting up a consultation with our staff. We can help you find a solution that works best for your budget and your oral health. Don't let the domino effect happen to your mouth, call us today!
