Can Poor Oral Health Lead to Strokes?

Posted on 6/13/2018 by Dr. Brandon Cooley
Gum Disease Cooley Smiles WA 98208-5147Having poor oral health is dangerous because it increases your risk of developing long-term health issues. For instance, if you have gum disease, you're more than twice as likely to suffer from a stroke. The risk grows higher with the worse the condition becomes.

Understanding the Correlation Between the Disease and the Risk

Doctors find it interesting that there's a correlation between the stage of your gum disease and the likelihood you'll have a stroke. However, since studies in this regard are observational in nature, it's difficult to prove the cause and effect relationship here.

Unfortunately, researchers don't understand why this happens other than there's a correlation between the levels of inflammation that's found in both the hardening of your arteries and gum disease. When this happens to the blood vessels in your brain or neck it can cause you to have a stroke.

Another reason researchers suggest this correlation may occur is because people who neglect their oral health are less likely to seek medical treatment when they're ill. They're also less likely to take the medication they're prescribed - at least not properly.

Some people may argue that these people were predisposed to having a stroke because of hereditary or genetic risk factors - things like race, age, or other health factors. However, this was taken into consideration and different types of strokes were also considered. Ultimately, these factors didn't play a role here.

Preventing Gum Disease and Strokes

Something that we've been advocating for years is important here as well: You need to visit our office on a regular basis for routine dental checkups.

In doing so, we'll be able to help you take better care of your teeth and gums so you don't develop periodontal disease. This is good news because it'll also help you prevent yourself from having a stroke. So, make sure you contact us for an appointment today.
