What Causes Red Spots on the Gums?

Minor Injury

A little red patch on your gums can result from a minor injury, such as accidentally biting your cheek or brushing your teeth too aggressively. Despite this, it is a minor bruise that will heal in no time.

Irritation

Certain snacks or beverages, such as spicy meals or hot drinks, can irritate your gums. Sour candy is also a known culprit. These foods can lead to a temporary red area on your gums.

Poor Oral Hygiene

If you do not brush and floss your teeth regularly, plaque and bacteria can accumulate on your gums, leading to inflammation and redness. This is a sign of poor oral hygiene, but it can also be easily resolved with improved oral care techniques performed regularly.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a very mild gum disease that causes the gums to swell and turn red. Poor dental hygiene is typically the root cause of this condition, although it is treatable with the proper care.

Hormonal Changes

Pregnant women may suffer changes in their gums due to hormonal fluctuations. This causes the gums to become softer or spongier and then more red and sensitive.

Medication

Several medications can irritate the gums or cause changes in the mouth as a side effect. In highly unusual instances, a red spot on the gums may indicate an infection, such as a dental abscess, which necessitates immediate dental attention.
