If you want to ensure that your teeth remain straight after removing your braces, you must ensure you put on a retainer. This device helps to ensure your teeth are in proper alignment. A retainer is a device that you can comfortably wear over the teeth. After orthodontic treatment, your teeth will require time to remain in position as the surrounding gums and bones adjust to changes. That's why you need a retainer to stabilize your teeth. Two types of retainers that are available in the market are removable and fixed.

Removable Retainers

Removable retainers are appliances that are engineered with acrylic or plastic material. They are made to fit the shape and size of your mouth precisely. The devices can also have metal wires for adequate reinforcement. Removable retainers can easily be removed when flossing, brushing, or eating.

Removable retainers are easier to maintain as it is easier to brush and floss. Also, since you can take them out, there are few diet restrictions on what you can eat.

Fixed Retainers

Fixed retainers are fixed on your teeth using dental cement. These retainers are ideal to hold your teeth in the correct position. They are usually suitable for the front teeth. Since they are fixed, patients don't have to worry about removing and placing them back in position. If your dentist recommends them, you must know how to maintain them.

Fixed retainers require special care to ensure they don't accumulate food particles or plaque. Oral hygiene issues can occur if you don't properly care for them. In some instances, these retainers can remain in place even for years with proper care.

Ultimately the choice between removable and fixed retainers will depend on your preference and budget. Removable retainers are preferred since they are cost-effective and easier to maintain. Permanent retainers, on the other hand, are aesthetically appealing and durable.
