How to prevent a dry socket

Posted on 9/25/2023 by Evan
How to prevent a dry socketPreventing a dry socket is paramount after tooth extraction. A dry socket comes about when the blood clot that is supposed to form after an extraction dissolves. As such the empty socket is left exposed to all forms of attacks. This can cause excruciating pain if not addressed immediately. The clot protects both the underlying bone and the nerves.

Make soft foods your friend

After the dental surgery or extraction, see to it that you stick to soft foods for the first two days. Interrupting the blood clotting process with hard foods will result in a dry socket. Make it a gradual escalation process from soft foods to hard foods as the days go by. Soft foods you could consider include yogurt, soups, mashed potatoes, and sauces. Keep away from using straws to drink. Straws require a suction movement. This suction will definitely extricate the clot.

Maintain oral hygiene

Brushing your teeth can be somewhat tricky after dental surgery or extraction. However, our doctors will advise you on the best way to keep your mouth clean. When the mouth is clean, the risk of germs and infections breaking down the blood clot is nonexistent. You could start by rinsing your mouth on the first day after an extraction. From the second day, it would be okay to brush but very gently.

Expected treatment

Seeking medical intervention will go a long way in managing a dry socket. Doctors recommend the use of antibacterial mouthwashes during and after extraction to get rid of the germs. However, be sure not to use mouthwash that contains any alcohol content. Alcohol will only irritate the wound, dislodge the clot and facilitate more bleeding. In the case of a suppressed immune system, oral antibiotics will come in handy in treating a dry socket. The doctor may also opt for either of the following two options. The first option is dressing the wound to allow for healing without any interruption. The second option is to simply apply an antiseptic to the wound.
