The Role Of Orthodontics In Jaw Surgery

Posted on 7/24/2023 by Dr. Brandon Cooley
The Role Of Orthodontics In Jaw SurgeryOrthodontic treatment is a necessity before and after any jaw surgery. Jaw surgery is more of a corrective option for cases where orthodontic treatment is not sufficient. Before the jaw surgery can be done, orthodontists will first ascertain that the teeth are in the right position that favors the positioning of the jaws after the surgery.

The place of the orthodontist before the jaw surgery

Our orthodontist will set braces on your teeth first before the jaw surgery. In most cases, a patient stays with the braces for a period of 12 to 18 months preceding the surgery. This period serves to align the teeth in anticipation of the scheduled jaw surgery. It's usually the joint effort of oral and maxillofacial surgeons and orthodontists. They all contribute to the treatment plan and thus ensure that all factors are well taken care of. The approach to have the teeth fitted together will oftentimes require the teeth to be reshaped or covered with crowns. Such recalibration can only be done by qualified orthodontists who attest to their importance before, during, and after every jaw surgery.

Orthodontics techniques

We have orthodontics provisional anchoring devices that can help significantly reduce the time period that you need to have the braces on. Other techniques such as three-dimensional CT scanning and computer-formulated treatment plans are vital in helping teeth movement. A combination of all of the above efforts can sometimes do away with the need for jaw surgeries.

After the surgery, the initial jaw healing takes about six weeks. At this point, our orthodontist is well able to complete the alignment process of your teeth with braces. It is important to note that the entire orthodontic process takes several years. We, therefore, advise that you stay put and stick with us through the whole process. Once our orthodontist removes the braces, they can recommend the use of retainers that help to hold the tooth in position. Be sure to book a free consultation with us today.
