The American Association of Endodontists points out that over 15 million root canal procedures are done annually. This figure is an indication that pulp damage is a real problem for many families and individuals. Once the pulp of a tooth or the innermost part of a tooth becomes damaged or infected, a root canal may be necessary.
Determining when a root canal is needed is the work of a dentist and not the patient. After evaluation, a dentist will tell you if you should have root canal therapy. Nonetheless, before a dentist decides, here are some signs that could signal the need for a root canal.
Pain
Infected or decayed pulp will present with pain. The blood vessels and nerves in the pulp chamber are living tissues and they are sensitive. The pain you experience is persistent and can feel deep in the bone. You could also have pain in the jaw, face, and surrounding teeth, which is called referred pain. Besides, you may have pain while eating or touching the tooth, including when brushing.
Swollen Gums
Due to the infection or damage, the tissue around the tooth will be inflamed and painful. The acid waste produced by the dead pulp will cause swelling around the teeth. You may have swelling that sets in and then disperses. Also, there could be an abscess on the gums or a small pimple that may ooze pus and release a bad smell.
Tooth Sensitivity
Since nerves are getting damaged by decay and the blood vessels are also impacted, you develop sensitivity, which presents as a sharp pain or a dull ache, especially when you eat or drink cold and hot items. The sensitivity is persistent and does not feel normal.
Tooth Discoloration
Your tooth could turn black or gray because of the infection. The decay cuts off blood supply to the pulp and it is a concern that warrants a trip to a dentist for a checkup. Contact us if you have these symptoms to see if a root canal may be necessary.
