Can You Get Cleaner Teeth When You Make Your Own Toothpaste? Are you considering making your own toothpaste? While you could certainly save money, there are other pros and cons that you need to consider before you go this route.

How Effective is Homemade Toothpaste?

Research into how efficient homemade toothpaste might be is limited. While one showed that DIY toothpaste can be just as effective as store-bought options when it comes to plaque removal, this could be attributed to the scrubbing action of the brush rather than the toothpaste itself. The toothpaste simply acts as an abrasive that helps the brush to remove food and plaque from the surfaces of the teeth.

Another area that homemade toothpaste shines is when it comes to freshening the breath. Depending on the recipe, you could end up with fresher breath than store-bought options. Plus, by simply brushing your teeth and removing odor-causing bacteria found in plaque, you'll also work to freshen the breath.

What about Fluoride?

The major downside to homemade toothpaste is that it doesn't contain fluoride. This mineral is added into your drug store toothpaste, as it has proven benefits when it comes to the prevention of tooth decay. While your municipal water supply will likely have fluoride, a toothpaste that also contains fluoride is an asset.

Are There Other Benefits to Store Toothpastes?

In addition to fluoride, toothpastes found in your local drug store contain active ingredients to deal with oral health problems. For example, if you suffer from gingivitis or tooth sensitivity, there is likely a toothpaste variety out there that can help. Plus, these toothpaste options have been studied and approved by the FDA, so you can feel confident that the formulas are safe.
