The best thing to do if you burn your mouth with hot food or drink is to get something cold in it quickly. Ice water is always a good choice, or you can also let an ice cube dissolve slowly for pain relief.

Ice cream or cold milk are two excellent choices and a great way of healing after burning your mouth. They're not only cold, but thick and creamy, which will help coat the affected area -usually the roof of your mouth.

Salt Water

After the numbing from the ice cream or water wears off, you will feel the pain or discomfort come back, so what can you do then? Salt water. An ancient method for disinfecting wounds, swishing warm salt water around is a very helpful way of healing after burning your mouth.

Mix half teaspoon of salt with one cup of hot water until dissolved. Let it cool to lukewarm or room temperature and use as needed.

Over-the-Counter Medications

A pain reliever such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen or whichever product you prefer, can also help with managing the pain from an oral burn. Products such as Orajel contain numbing ingredients that can relieve the discomfort in your mouth. Use as directed.
