Protecting Your Veneers Takes a Consistent Effort

A woman happy with her new dental veneers.Dental veneers are great when you need a few cosmetic fixes on your teeth. They can make your teeth look whiter, fill in small gaps, cover old discoloration, and just give your teeth a better overall appearance. However, they also have a few things you need to remember to keep them looking their best.

Caring for Dental Veneers Properly Helps Them Last

Once you get dental veneers, typically, you cannot have the procedure undone. It normally requires a bit of your tooth's enamel to be removed, so there is a surface for the veneer to bond with. This means, you need to take good care of your veneers, or you are going to wind up replacing them in a much shorter time frame than you would otherwise need to.

You also need to make sure you are rather delicate with them. While dental veneers are strong, they are also made of porcelain. This means they are basically a very thin sheet of glass. Thick glass remains tough and strong when put under pressure, but thin panes of glass shatter. If you put too much pressure on your veneers, you could damage them or wind up with chips and cracks.

Dental veneers are also prone to staining, just like fine china. If you want to keep your dental veneers looking great for years to come, then you need to make sure that you are being careful with what you eat and drink. Steer clear of dark beverages, or try and drink them through a straw. The same goes for staining foods, such as curries and beets.
