Pregnancy and Tooth Decay: Why you Should be Worried

Pregnancy and tooth decay can often go hand-in-hand. This is not something that many expecting women worry about, but they should! If you think about it, the baby pulls all of the nutrients it needs from your body, this means that your body pays the price.
Oftentimes women are able to overcome these deficiencies by eating a healthy diet, but if you are suffering from chronic morning sickness, it can seem impossible. This could put you at risk for serious tooth decay, which can put the health of your unborn baby at risk.
If you are pregnant, it is important to come in for an appointment at least twice during your pregnancy. This need is even more important if you are constantly vomiting, as the acids in the vomit can eat away at the enamel of your teeth, putting you at higher risk for tooth decay.
Even if you think you are eating healthy and caring for your teeth, exams are essential to ensuring that your teeth are healthy. One common concern of expecting women is a calcium deficiency, which is what keeps the enamel of your teeth strong. Without the proper levels of calcium, your enamel could begin to wear down and become at risk for decay.
In order to stop your risk, make sure that you are brushing your teeth at least twice a day, or after every time that you eat if possible. In addition, make sure to consume plenty of dark leafy vegetables that are rich in calcium, as well as low-fat milk and cheese. These habits will help to prevent your teeth from becoming decayed while pregnant!
